Guess what, Tourist’s loyalty points! Yes, Maldives is set to be the first country in the world to introduce a hospitality loyalty program feature for tourists visiting the Asian country. This is from the norm of having loyalty points from Airlines and Hotels.

It’s reported that the Maldives border Miles Program will have three tiers: Abaaran (Gold), Antara (Silver) and Aida (Bronze). All the names come from Divehi-the nation’s primary local language.

The announcement was made on 28 September via Maldives Immigration-the official Government run Twitter account:

“Maldives Border Miles is a three-tiered loyalty program for tourists. Tourists will earn points based on the number of visits and duration of stay. Additional points will be awarded for visits to celebrate special occasions.”

Some experts have thrown weight to the idea terming the move as innovative, unique and one which will have a long-term economic effect given Maldives’ economy which is heavily dependent on the Tourism and Hospitality industries. It’s not yet clear how the points will be accumulated or what kinds of perks travelers will get.

For a long time, the Island has maintained its status as a luxury destination for travelers looking to unwind and relax in the white sandy beaches. The introduction of the points system will potentially balance out some of the costs incurred when visiting the island with upgrades, freebies and other perks.

Maldives is not the only country getting creative especially in the wake of Covid-19 to attract tourists. Some countries have for instance offered extension of Visas to tourists visiting the countries.
